An unconfirmed report in the Daily Express suggests Russian SSGN RFS Kazan was detected by RAF P-8A Poseidon on June 5 off west coast of Ireland. (Kazan subsequently arrived in Havanah on 12 June).

On this day in 1940 during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France, the White Star Liner Lancastria is sunk by the Luftwaffe. She had thousands of troops onboard and is the UK’s worst maritime disaster. Loss of life was more than 3000 and maybe as high as 6000.

French destroyer Maillé-Brézé, (D627), the squadron escort, now a museum, must go to the Saint-Nazaire shipyard in 2024 to be restored. The T 47-class destroyer was built in 1957.

Fijian patrol vessel RFNS Puamau ran aground on her maiden voyage this week. The Guardian-class vessel donated by the government of Australia to Fiji hit a reef off the Lau islands. Australians are sending teams to attempt salvage. A few No.9’s to be allocated no doubt.
