The crew initially believed that there had been an explosion in the engine room, but it was soon learned that Bratstvo had been holed in a collision with the Victor I-class submarine K-53. K-53 suffered a severely damaged bow and had to go to Tunisia for urgent repairs. Bratstvo was towed to Spain, where it was scrapped.
