USS Buchanan (DDG-14) was sunk as a target in 2000 during a training exercise called RIMPAC. The ship was struck by an AGM/RGM-84 Harpoon missile, which tore through the superstructure and ignited fires, leaving a scorched hole near the bow. The damage ultimately led to the ship’s sinking.

Vanguard class boat returning from 203-day patrol yesterday, welcomed home by families on Rhu Spit on the way into Faslane. The marine growth on the casing gives a clue as to how long the boat has been underwater.
