On this day in 1958, USS Skate circumnavigated the globe in 50 minutes. To accomplish this remarkable feat, the sub took a shortcut by sailing on a circular course within two miles of the North Pole. The Skate only needed to travel 12 miles to pass through all of the world’s time zones.

This is the training variant of a Ship Launched Stingray Torpedo launched from HMS MONTROSE, in what was likely her last firing. Stingray can launch up to 4 from the ship and more from a helicopter, which gives the Type 23 its anti-submarine teeth.
