On this day in 1942, cargo ship USS Alhena (AK-26), was hit by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-4. The crew quickly controlled the fires and then used sheets of plywood to construct temporary bulkheads. The Alhena was repaired and back in service 8 months later.

Pentagon says about 200 Ballistic Missiles fired by Iran against Israel were Intercepted by a dozen missiles (likely SM-3’s) from a group of U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-Class Guided-Missile Destroyers operating in the Eastern Mediterranean, including the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG-51), USS Cole (DDG-67), and USS Bulkeley (DDG-84).

80 years ago in 1944, the only aircraft carrier to be built in HMNB Devonport was launched as HMS Terrible. Before she was completed the War ended and she was sold to Australia as HMAS Sydney, serving until 1973.

809 Naval Air Squadron F-35s embark on HMS Prince of Wales today to begin pilot carrier qualification. This is the first time 809 Squadron jets have embarked on a carrier since 1982.
