On this day in 1943, aircraft flying from USS Ranger (CV-4), destroyed 5 German ships and damaged another 7 during Operation Leader in Norway. USS Ranger was the U.S. Navy’s first purpose-built carrier and the only one from the pre-war era not to engage the Japanese in battle.

Sad to report Royal New Zealand Navy’s hydrographic survey and diving support ship HMNZS Manawanui ran aground, caught fire and sank off Samoa while doing a reef survey yesterday evening. 75 crew on board are reported safe ashore.

Ex HMS Bristol, in 3 basin Portsmouth. The discovery of more asbestos and decay has delayed her disposal. Hull strengthening is required to add 650 tons of ballast to make her stable for towing. The need for favourable weather means she will probably be towed to Turkey for scrapping in Spring 2025.

On this day in 1982 Leander Class Frigate, HMS Bacchanti was transferred to the RNZ Navy. First Commissioned in 1969 she served the UK and New Zealand as HMNZS Wellington, for over 30 years. Finally decommissioned in 2000 she was later sunk as an artificial diving reef in the Cook Strait.
