HMS Illustrious fire on the 3rd of April 1986. At 23:30 whilst reaching full engine revs, she suffered a catastrophic gearbox failure which almost saw the end of the vessel’s naval career. Fire raged for 4 hours, being brought under control by her ship’s company

On this day 70 years ago, HMS Protector, an RN Netlayer since 1936, began her new service as the Falklands and Antarctic patrol & survey ship. She was scrapped in 1970, but today her namesake, HMS Protector, still surveys the Antarctic as the RN’s only Ice Patrol Ship.
