On this day in 1944, the crew of USS Finback (SS-230) rescued a young lanky pilot who had bailed out of his flaming Grumman TBM Avenger after the plane was hit by flak while attacking Japanese installations. LTJG George H. W. Bush would go on to be the 41st president of the United States.

On this day in 1988, HMS Southampton was seriously damaged in a collision with the MV Tor Bay in the Persian Gulf. She was only 7 years old at the time. After recovering in the UK, she was rebuilt by Swan Hunter and re-entered service in 1991. She served a further 18 years.
