Cold War incident in the Sargasso Sea in November 1983, involving a Soviet submarine and U.S. Navy vessels. The submarine is the Soviet K-324, a Victor III-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. U.S. Navy Spruance-class destroyer USS Peterson (DD-969). The smaller vessel is the Soviet Moma-class survey ship Nakhodka. The K-324 had previously snagged the towed sonar array of another U.S. frigate, the USS McCloy, which damaged its propeller and forced it to surface. On this day in 1958, the uncompleted USS Kentucky (BB-66) was sold for scrap. Originally intended to be a Montana-class battleship, BB-66 was reordered as the last of the Iowa-class. After WWII, plans to convert the Kentucky into a carrier or a guided missile ship were abandoned.
