Cold War incident in the Sargasso Sea in November 1983, involving a Soviet submarine and U.S. Navy vessels. The submarine is the Soviet K-324, a Victor III-class nuclear-powered attack submarine. U.S. Navy Spruance-class destroyer USS Peterson (DD-969). The smaller vessel is the Soviet Moma-class survey ship Nakhodka. The K-324 had previously snagged the towed sonar array of another U.S. frigate, the USS McCloy, which damaged its propeller and forced it to surface. The vessels in the image were involved in the subsequent rescue and salvage operation for the disabled Soviet submarine.
