On this day in 1950, USS Valley Forge (CV 45) and HMS Triumph participated in the first carrier action of the Korean War. VF 51 aircraft from Valley Forge shot down two North Korean aircraft. The action is also the first combat test of F9F Panther and AD Skyraider. HMS Triumph operated Supermarine Seafire 47’s and Fairey Fireflies.

Royal Navy Sandown Class Minehunter HMS Pembroke pictured sailing from HMNB Clyde in Western Scotland, when in commission. The Class was originally named the Single Role Minehunter and was planned to complement the preceding Hunt class’s capabilities and be cheaper to build. Sandown MCMVs were highly manoeuvrable vessels and were considered to be the best Minehunters active in the world.

The Royal Navy wants three new-build mine hunting motherships. It has emerged that the RN plans to acquire up to three ‘survivable, non-complex warships’ designed from the outset to be motherships for autonomous mine-hunting boats.
