In 1976, a U.S. Navy torpedo recovery boat was dragging a parachute as a sea anchor when it snagged something. After a fierce struggle, the crew managed to pull aboard a bizarre creature. They had discovered the megamouth shark. Only 100 have been seen since.

On this day 40 years ago, in 1984, a major fire broke out in the Steam Turbine Room of the Destroyer HMS BRISTOL at anchor off Portsmouth. The fire was eventually dealt with but caused significant damage which was repaired in her refit period that year.

OnThisDay 80 years ago in 1943, MTB 81 sank the U-Boat, U-561 in the Messina Strait, Sicily. MTB 81 was a 70 Ft, Motor Torpedo Boat, armed with twin torpedoes and AA Guns. These vessels and their brave crews were instrumental in the coastal defence of the UK & all theatres.
