ITS Giovanni Delle Bande Nere arrived in Faslane and came alongside at Garelochhead yesterday. Classed as an “Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel” by the Italian Navy, she is effectively a frigate/destroyer and carries up to 16 Aster 30 Block 1NT missiles which may be test-fired during exercise FormidableShield.

On this day in 1943, USS Gato surfaced to find an unexploded Japanese depth charge on the deck. Because the charge could not be rolled into the water for fear of it detonating, it was lifted into a life raft that had a slow leak and then placed in the path of a pursuing destroyer.

Final unit lifted into place at aft end of 2nd Type 31 frigate, HMS Active. Babcockplc Rosyth. This completes the flight deck and clears the way for the next major milestone of dropping stern supports to align the propellor shafts.
