On this day in 1945, the German aircraft carrier Graf Zeppelin was scuttled to avoid capture by the advancing Soviets. In violation of terms set by the Allied Tripartite Commission, the Soviets secretly refloated and salvaged the carrier. Soviet records state that Graf Zeppelin was sunk during weapons tests in 1947.
