On this day 20 years ago, the Assault Ship HMS Bulwark was accepted from her builders BAES Maritime in HMNB Devonport paving the way for her commissioning in to service the following year. HMS Bulwark is currently the last surface ship to be built at Barrow.

HMS Northumberland scrapping saves over £100 million. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has provided detailed responses to parliamentary questions concerning the early retirement of HMS Northumberland. The Type 23 frigate was deemed uneconomical to repair after significant structural damage was discovered during a planned refit.

The last of the Royal Navy’s Trafalgar submarines returns home for decommissioning. With her special decommissioning pennant flying, the last of the Royal Navy’s Trafalgar-class attack submarines, HMS Triumph, has arrived home in Plymouth. The boat served for close to 34 years on operations around the globe. Her pressure hull and reactor fuel is life-expired and she will never put to sea again. After storage for a couple of decades she will be recycled in Devonport.

In the 1930’s, US Cost Guard built two cutters to battle rum runners, Calypso and Perseus. After their service life they were used for sightseeing tours, and during 9/11 they transported 5000 + people to safety.
