The wreck of the Hōfuku Maru, a Japanese “hell ship” that sank in 1944, was recently identified off the coast of Luzon in the Philippines.Tragic Discovery: The vessel was located at a depth of approximately 50 meters by a team from the Philippines-based Hellships Memorial Foundation.High Casualty Count: On September 21, 1944, the ship was sunk by US Navy aircraft while transporting 1,289 Allied prisoners of war (primarily British and Dutch); approximately 1,047 prisoners lost their lives.Wreck Condition: Technical dives revealed the ship broken into two pieces, matching historical battle damage records.
