Soviet freighter SS Bratstvo was holed in a collision with the Victor I-class submarine K-53. K-53 suffered a severely damaged bow and had to go to Tunisia for urgent repairs. Sep 18 1984. On this day, (Sep 18) in 1984, the crew of the Soviet freighter SS Bratstvo was forced to abandon ship in the Strait of Gibraltar due to flooding. The crew initially believed that there had been an explosion in the engine room, but it was soon learned that Bratstvo had been holed in a collision with the Victor I-class submarine K-53. K-53 suffered a severely damaged bow and had to go to Tunisia for urgent repairs. Bratstvo was towed to Spain, where it was scrapped.
