In 1954, Admiral, Earl Mountbatten of Burma relinquished command of Allied Forces in the Mediterranean. As a sign of respect, British, American, Greek, French, Italian and Turkish admirals from the NATO Headquarters at Malta manned oars and rowed him out to HMS Surprise.
