Although not a dockyard, the military port of Cairnryan in SW Scotland was built in the 1939/45 was as a back up facility in case Dockyards were damaged. Used as a major shipbreaking centre 1947/50 and then 1970/91. Here is HMS Ark Royal arriving for break up in November 1980. On the beach seaping oil is her half sister Eagle two years after her arrival. On the jetty is the former trawler Ross Revenge which escaped break up and became and still is the Radio Caroline ship and after an incredible career, she is broadcasting on occasions from the Blackwater estuary Essex.

On this day 1971 the Ton Class Minesweeper HMS Belton, who was part of the Fisheries Protection Squadron, dragged her anchor in a gale at Lochmaddy, Scotland. Due to 50 Ton Class still being in service she was declared a total loss and cannibalised for spares.
