On April 30 1946, the destroyer escort USS Solar ( DE-221 ) exploded at the ammunition pier while unloading munitions. Seven sailors were killed, and 30 dock workers were injured.

These ships were specifically designed for shallow-water operations, coastal defence, and shore bombardment rather than direct fleet battles. They featured a single twin turret mounting two 15-inch (381 mm) main guns, recycled from older vessels.
