On this day in 2010 HMS Astute was commissioned into the Royal Navy. HMS Astute symbolises how far the ‘silent service’ has come in a century. Her keel was laid almost 100 years to the day of Holland 1, the first Royal Navy submarine.

MoD says the decommissioned nuclear submarine dismantling project at Rosyth is making positive progress with time taken for each boat being reduced. The bulk of accessible low-level nuclear waste has been safely removed from ex-HMS Swiftsure, Resolution, Revenge and Repulse.
