On this day in 1975, the cruiser USS Belknap and carrier USS John F. Kennedy collided, sparking a fire that caused the Belknap’s aluminum superstructure to collapse. The incident contributed to the Navy’s decision to revert to all-steel construction for Arleigh Burke-class destroyers.

On this day in 1960, the ballistic missile sub USS Ethan Allen (SSBN-608) was launched. An anti-nuclear group blocked the river with several boats while a few protestors boarded the sub by climbing the bunting. The USCG quickly towed the boats away. All the protestors were arrested.
