During the Cold War, U.S. submarines such as USS L. Mendel Rivers would torment the Soviet spy trawlers tracking them by getting close and then blowing the sanitary tanks. Blowing the tanks caused a huge roaring noise and enveloped the Soviet ships in waste.

British warships in show of force to Russian vessel. The Royal Navy closely monitored a Russian naval task group, consisting of two landing ships and four other vessels, as they transited the English Channel this week, according to a press release.

HMS Brocklesby was refloated last week. The project is in the next phase, handing systems and compartments back to the RN before the ship’s crew moves on board in the summer. HMS Brocklesby will begin her sea trials programme after a period of maintenance work.

It was National Kite Flying Day In 1961, USS Spinax (SSR-489) became the first submarine to fly a kite while submerged. The 5’x7′ kite was fashioned from bamboo sticks, a garment bag, cellophane tape and 1500 feet of nylon line. It served no purpose other than to entertain the crew who watched it through the periscope during a Pacifc crossing.
