HMS Evadne (FY 009), a converted armed yacht commissioned as an anti-submarine vessel by the Royal Navy, seen here in HM Dockyard Gibraltar in 1945. Evadne served in the Irish Sea and Bermuda until being reallocated to the Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean, arriving on 12 March 1944 in Gibraltar, where she was based until hostilities ended. On 19 February 1945, she badly damaged German U-boat U-300 with depth charges.

On this day 50 years ago, the Audacious Class Carrier, HMS Eagle, was towed from HMNB Portsmouth to HMNB Devonport where she remained for 6 years to be cannibalised for spares to keep her sister, HMS Ark Royal, running.
