The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) returned to its homeport of Naval Base San Diego, Jan. 30, after completing a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 3rd and 7th Fleet areas of operations.

On this week in 1985, USS Buchanan (DDG-14) was denied entry to New Zealand due to the government’s anti-nuclear stance and the U.S. Navy’s policy to neither confirm nor deny the presence of nukes on its ships. The incident resulted in the U.S. suspending military ties with New Zealand.
