On this day in 1988, USS Bonefish (SS-582) was forced to the surface, where the crew abandoned the sub because of an intense fire in the battery compartment. 89 men were rescued by USS Carr and USS John F. Kennedy, but 3 sailors died. Bonefish had to be scrapped due to the damage.
