A one-off, supposed to be the lead ship of escorts for the cancelled CVA-01 aircraft carrier. Launched in 1969, served in the Falklands War. Paid off in 1991. On this day. 20 years ago, in 2005, the bow section for the first Type 45 Destroyer, HMS Daring left HMNB Portsmouth for the Clyde to be joined to the hull. Fin removed from ex-HMS Swiftsure in Rosyth. She is on course to be fully dismantled by end of 2026, the first nuclear submarine to be disposed of by the UK.Over 500 tonnes of conventional waste have already been removed and 90% of her total weight will be recycled.
