On this day in 1977, sailors from HMS Danae invited the escaped great train robber, Ronnie Biggs, on board for a beer while alongside in Rio de Janeiro. At the time it caused political and Royal Navy embarrassment, but is a great example of the mischievous character of Jack.

HMS Lancaster has intercepted two boats within 24 hours carrying a total of £33 million worth of heroin, hashish and crystal meth. Drugs were seized by the ship’s boarding teams while operating in the Gulf of Oman.

The 11th of April was National Submarine Day, marking the day in 1900 when the US Navy purchased the first modern submarine, USS Holland (SS-1). USS Holland was named in honour of her designer and builder, John Philip Holland.

Docks UK has officially taken over global support of HMS Tamar, HMS Spey, HMS Medway, HMS Trent and HMS Forth in addition to their existing contract for HMS Protector. The 8-year, £250m contract will see the company work in partnership with overseas shipyards to oversee maintenance of these forward-deployed ships.
