HMS Whimbrel and HMS Zenith. HMS Whimbrel is a famous warship with a rich history. It is the final Black Swan-class sloop of the Royal Navy that saw service during World War II. The ship was laid down in 1941, and it participated in various operations, including convoy escort duties, anti-submarine patrols, and the Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union. HMS Whimbrel also played a significant role in the Battle of the Atlantic. NOTABLY it is the LAST Royal Navy warship that was present during the surrender of Japan in WW2. After the war, the ship was decommissioned in 1947 and subsequently sold to the Egyptian Navy, where it was renamed El Malek Farouk. The ship was finally retired in 1989 and has since become a training ship laid up in Egypt. In 2006 talks opened up between Britain and Egypt to see if the ship could be repurchased by Britain so that it could be saved for future generations. Talks continued in 2008 and by 2016 the Egyptians offered to sell the ship for 725,000 pounds, unfortunately however the funds could not be found and the ship sits laid up in Egypt as of 2023. HMS Zenith had a far less extensive service within the Royal Navy as it was only commissioned late into the war and served in the Far East. Zenith would also be sold to Egypt and named El Fateh. The notable thing about Zenith however is as of 2015 it was still in existence meaning that along with HMS Cavalier which is a museum ship in Chatham, Zenith was the last WW2 era Royal Navy destroyer in the world meaning it held immense historic value despite it’s uneventful service. Tragically in 2015 satellite imagery depicted Zenith being scrapped and by 2016 it seemed that the process was complete. In 2017 the name El Fateh was given to another Egyptian warships all but confirming the Zeniths tragic fate.
