The Guyana Defense Force’s new patrol vessel, GDFS Shahoud, was formally commissioned into the Guyanese Navy yesterday. The vessel, built by the American company Metal Shark, is designed to patrol the Guyanese Guyanese Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

On this day in 1940 during the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France, the White Star Liner Lancastria is sunk by the Luftwaffe. She had thousands of troops onboard and is the UK’s worst maritime disaster. Loss of life was more than 3000 and maybe as high as 6000.

French destroyer Maillé-Brézé, (D627), the squadron escort, now a museum, must go to the Saint-Nazaire shipyard in 2024 to be restored. The T 47-class destroyer was built in 1957.
