On this day in 1988, HMS Southampton was seriously damaged in a collision with the MV Tor Bay in the Persian Gulf. She was only 7 years old at the time. After recovering in the UK, she was rebuilt by Swan Hunter and re-entered service in 1991. She served a further 18 years.

On this day in 1941, U-570 surrendered to RAF bombers after being damaged and forced to the surface by depth charges. After being commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS Graph, the captured U-boat provided the Allies with important intelligence about German submarines.

LE George Bernard Shaw of the Irish Naval Service at the refuelling pier Haulbowline, Cork. All 4 Beckett class OPVs alongside together with 2 new patrol vessels bought from New Zealand. Both Róisín class OPVs were at Verolme Dockyard. Acute personnel issues with the Irish Naval Service mean not a single ship at sea.
