On this day in 1968, Battleship New Jersey was recommissioned for service in Vietnam after being modernized at the Philadelphia Naval Yard. She was the only battleship called to serve in Vietnam, and was selected in part because she was in the best material condition compared to the other three Iowa-class.

Putin announces plans to spend 8.4 trillion rubles on naval construction in the next decade (approx £77.2 Billion). The Russians “plan” to do a lot of things, but right now their focus is on a land war in Ukraine. That will consume almost all of their financial resources, so it will remain to be seen what Russia is going to spend on its Navy. It will, however, maintain a strong submarine capability (both nuclear and diesel-electric) because they know those are the most powerful naval weapons they have.
