On this day 150 years ago in 1875 the Royal Navy Corvette, HMS Challenger discovered the deepest point of the earth’s ocean in the Mariana Trench. Named the Challenger Deep, the depth was measured by line at 26,850 ft, and in 1952, the survey ship HMS Challenger measured it at 35,760 ft.

PACIFIC OCEAN (Aug. 31, 2016) Sailors aboard the Whidbey Island-class amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42) gather on the port bridge wing as the ship prepares for a replenishment-at-sea. Germantown, attached to Expeditionary Strike Group 7, is underway in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operation in support of security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific.
