On this day 40 years ago, in 1984, a major fire broke out in the Steam Turbine Room of the Destroyer HMS BRISTOL at anchor off Portsmouth. The fire was eventually dealt with but caused significant damage which was repaired in her refit period that year.

July 14th 1982: HMS Plymouth arrives home to Rosyth with an incredible welcome. Easily one of the hardest working ships of the task force, she bears her scars well… not bad for a ship which was claimed sunk with all hands a month before.

OnThisDay 80 years ago in 1943, MTB 81 sank the U-Boat, U-561 in the Messina Strait, Sicily. MTB 81 was a 70 Ft, Motor Torpedo Boat, armed with twin torpedoes and AA Guns. These vessels and their brave crews were instrumental in the coastal defence of the UK & all theatres.
