USS Alhena (AK-26) after being hit by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-4 on September 29, 1942, during World War 2. The torpedo strike caused significant damage, creating a large hole in the ship’s hull. Despite the severe damage, the crew successfully contained fires and constructed temporary bulkheads using plywood, demonstrating remarkable damage control. The USS Alhena was subsequently repaired and returned to service within eight months.
