USS Fulton (AS-11) moored at Naval Station San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the start of the 1970s. She is accompanied by five submarines, three of which are diesel submarines while the other two are nuclear-powered submarines. The submarine rescue ship USS Skylark (ASR-20) is also tied up among the submarines.

On this day in 1958, the uncompleted USS Kentucky (BB-66) was sold for scrap. Originally intended to be a Montana-class battleship, BB-66 was reordered as the last of the Iowa-class. After WWII, plans to convert the Kentucky into a carrier or a guided missile ship were abandoned.
