On this day, 20 years ago, in 2005, the first Type 23 Frigate, HMS Norfolk, paid off in HMNB Devonport after only 15 years’ service. Ofthe class of 16, only 8 remain in RN servoce, and none have been replaced. 3 including Norfolk, remain in service with the Chilean Navy.

On 29th May in 1945, FADM Chester Nimitz addressed the crew of HMS King George V to emphasise the vital role of the Royal Navy in winning the war in the Pacific. To further express U.S. appreciation of British efforts, Nimitz gave the crew an American ice cream machine.
