British Mark VIII (Mk 8) steam torpedo widely used by Royal Navy surface ships and submarines during World War II. Historically associated with the Whitehead Torpedo Works located in Weymouth and Portland, Dorset, where torpedoes were manufactured and tested in Portland Harbour. On 2 May 1982, the nuclear-powered attack submarine HMS Conqueror fired three Mark 8 torpedoes at the Argentine cruiser ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War, scoring two direct hits and sinking the ship. This stands as the only time a nuclear-powered submarine has sunk an enemy warship in combat.
