With Sea Vixens, a Fairey Gannet, and Buccaneers ranged on her deck, before converting to the Commando/ASW carrier role. In the mid-1960s, a decision was taken to phase out fixed-wing carrier aviation, and Hermes was consequently designated for conversion into a “Commando Carrier” to support Royal Marine operations, broadly comparable in concept to a U.S. Navy LHA. Between 1971 and 1973, she was laid up in No. 10 Dock at Devonport Dockyard, where she underwent extensive modification.
