USS Alhena (AK-26) after being hit by a torpedo from the Japanese submarine I-4 on September 29, 1942, during World War 2. The torpedo strike caused significant damage, creating a large hole in the ship’s hull. Despite the severe damage, the crew successfully contained fires and constructed temporary bulkheads using plywood, demonstrating remarkable damage control.
