Ghosts of World War II have resurfaced on the Danube. Due to the severe drop in the Danube’s water level, Nazi military ships have emerged in Serbia. The vessels were deliberately sunk in 1944 during the German retreat to prevent them from falling into the hands of the Red Army. Around 200 ships, barges, and tugboats may still be lying on the riverbed near Prahovo. The wrecks are obstructing navigation, and some of the vessels may still contain ammunition. With support from the EU, Serbia has begun raising the wrecks and clearing the river.
