XVPTBK has returned to Portsmouth following refit and new paint job ready for a new series of trials and experimentation under the auspices of the Disruptive Capabilities and Technologies Office (DCTO).In Oct 2024, the RN issued a tender for a 5-year £6.6M contract to maintain XV Patrick Blackett that will run from April 2025 – March 2030.
The USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) arrived earlier today at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Crete, Greece for repairs, following last week’s collision with the Panamanian-flagged cargo vessel, Besiktas-M, in the Southern Mediterranean near the Suez Canal. Damage to the vessel appears to be mostly superficial, causing no injuries or flooding.
The high-speed transport (converted from a Clemson-class destroyer) USS Barry was decommissioned in 1945 after being severely damaged by a kamikaze near Okinawa. Because the ship’s silhouette above the main deck was intact, the Barry was towed to sea as a decoy to lure the kamikaze away from more valuable targets. Within hours, a suicide pilot took the bait and smashed into the Barry. The Barry sank but had absorbed a hit that could have destroyed another fighting ship.
On this day in 2006, the first Ohio-class guided missile submarine rejoined the fleet after completing the first-ever SSBN to SSGN conversion. The longest serving boat in US Navy history.
