In 1942, USS Nautilus (SS-168) patrolled so close to the coast of Japan that the crew could see billboards advertising Asahi beer. The crew joked that they spent so much time in sight of the mainland that they deserved liberty in Yokohama.

On this day in 1943, USS Gato surfaced to find an unexploded Japanese depth charge on the deck. Because the charge could not be rolled into the water for fear of it detonating, it was lifted into a life raft that had a slow leak and then placed in the path of a pursuing destroyer.
